Strengthening Ties Between the Navy League and the U.S. Mission in Panama

Members of the Navy League Panama Chapter were honoured to attend the 250th United States Marine Corps Birthday Ball, held at the Sortis Hotel in Panama City, Panama, on or around 10 November 2025. This landmark anniversary – a quarter of a millennium since the founding of the Corps in 1775 – was celebrated in fine style, with all the ceremony, tradition, and camaraderie for which the Marines are so well known.

Our delegation included seven members of the Navy League Panama Chapter, joined by Lt Cdr Bradon Rostad, US Coast Guard, and Cdr Josh Bergen, US Navy. We were also delighted to share the evening with our friends from the U.S. Embassy in Panama, including Ambassador Kevin Marino, Ambassador to the United States in Panamá, and members of his staff who extended a warm and generous welcome throughout the event.

Honouring 250 Years of Courage, Discipline, and Sacrifice

The Marine Corps Birthday is not just a date on the calendar; it is a global tradition observed each year on 10 November, wherever Marines serve. The 250th anniversary was particularly significant, marked by celebrations around the world and major events in the United States, especially in Philadelphia, the historic birthplace of the Corps.

In Panama City, the ball at the Sortis Hotel captured that spirit beautifully. The evening’s programme and atmosphere paid heartfelt tribute to the courage, discipline, and sacrifice of the Marines. From the formal ceremony to the toasts, the cutting of the cake, and the speeches, every element underlined the deep sense of duty and unity that defines the Corps.

For those of us in the Navy League, it was both moving and humbling to be in a room filled with men and women who dedicate their lives to protecting freedom and upholding the values we share across our maritime services. The traditions of the Corps – observed with precision but also with warmth and humour – reminded us why their service means so much to the United States and to its partners and allies, including Panama.

A Strong Marine Presence and Spirited Camaraderie

There was a strong presence of U.S. Marines from the Embassy Marine Security Guard detachment, and they made a powerful impression – not just in their immaculate uniforms and professional bearing, but in their evident pride in the Corps and in one another. The room echoed with enthusiastic “Oorahs” throughout the evening, underscoring the unique esprit de corps that is instantly recognisable to anyone who has served alongside Marines.

Our Navy League members had many opportunities to speak with Marines, Embassy staff, and other guests, strengthening existing ties and building new friendships across the Sea Services community in Panama. The conversations ranged from shared operational experiences and sea stories to reflections on service, family, and the special bond that exists among those who wear (or have worn) a uniform.

A Memorable Gift – “A Shot” with a Sense of History

One of the more light-hearted but memorable moments of the evening was the gift presented to attendees: a commemorative shot glass, complete with an actual “shot” inside – a musket ball. The good-natured running joke suggested it might even have come from a British musket (we will graciously not pursue the ballistics report).

This thoughtful and humorous token perfectly captured the blend of tradition, history, and camaraderie that marked the evening. It was a small object, but rich with symbolism: a reminder of the Corps’ origins in the age of muskets and wooden ships, and of how far it has come in 250 years while still honouring its roots.

Excellent Hospitality and an Outstanding Buffet

The Sortis Hotel staff delivered outstanding service throughout the night. The buffet was excellent, offering a wide selection of dishes to suit all tastes, complemented by an impressive array of desserts that did not go unnoticed by our members.

There were also several open bars, including one conveniently located right next to our table. This helped ensure that glasses were never empty during the toasts and conversations that flowed well into the evening. The service was both professional and friendly, contributing greatly to the relaxed yet dignified tone of the celebration.

From check-in to the final farewells, the hotel staff demonstrated efficiency, courtesy, and genuine hospitality, for which we are very grateful.

Strengthening Ties Between the Navy League and the U.S. Mission in Panama

Beyond the ceremony and celebration, the evening was an important opportunity for the Navy League Panama Chapter to continue building strong relationships with the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the U.S. Embassy team in Panama. Our presence alongside Lt Cdr Rostad (USCG), Cdr Bergen (USN), and Ambassador Marino and his staff underlined the shared commitment to supporting the Sea Services and recognising the sacrifices of those who serve.

We are especially grateful to Ambassador Kevin Marino for the invitation, and to the entire Embassy staff for their warmth, hospitality, and meticulous organisation. Their efforts ensured that the 250th Marine Corps Birthday Ball in Panama was not only a formal commemoration, but also a genuinely welcoming and enjoyable event for all in attendance.

A Night to Remember

In summary, the 250th Marine Corps Birthday Ball at the Sortis Hotel was a thoroughly enjoyable and deeply meaningful evening. It combined tradition, ceremony, and reflection with excellent food, spirited company, and a tangible sense of pride in the Marine Corps’ 250-year legacy.

For the Navy League Panama Chapter, it was a privilege to be part of this historic celebration. We left the event with renewed respect for the Marines, strengthened ties with our American partners, and fond memories of an unforgettable night in honour of those who stand watch on the front lines of freedom.

On behalf of the Navy League Panama Chapter, we extend our heartfelt thanks and congratulations to the United States Marine Corps on its 250th birthday – and many more to come.

"Oorah!"
